2019 Christmas Markets in Germany

It’s finally December; days are getting shorter, the air is getting colder, and in some places snow is starting to fall already. With all of this it also means just one thing; Christmas is right around the corner! And with Christmas only weeks away Weihnachtsmarkts (Christmas Markets) in Germany are already in full swing.

Weihnachmarkts in Germany have a very long history, dating back to the late Middle Ages. The oldest “official” Christmas Market is Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, which began in 1434. However, even older “December Markets” predate even that; Frankfurt in 1393, Bautzen in 1384, Munich in 1310, and in Vienna accounts go all the way back to 1298! Each of these Markets has its own unique variations on Christmas traditions and each one is worth a visit.

At these Markets there are many popular traditions that draw visitors each year. On cold winter nights, one of the more popular attractions is definitely the food and drinks; especially hot Glühwein (mulled wine). Other Christmas Market treats include hot chocolate, reibekuchen (potato cakes), maronen (roasted chestnuts), candied almonds, bratwurst, and many others.

Another attraction is that Christmas markets are also basically fairs; with amusement rides, light shows, and usually large Ferris Wheels. Considering that around this time of year in Germany the sun sets around 4pm, these light shows are definitely an uplifting sight. Bringing cheer into what can otherwise be a gloomy time of year. Also in addition to all these attractions there are numerous shops where you can buy all sorts of gifts and specialty items.

Most Popular Cities

Although each Christmas Market, whether big or small, has its own unique charm, there are several cities across Germany that have reputations for being “the best”. Each of the 4 largest cities in Germany has numerous large Christmas Markets that are worth a visit. In Cologne there is a Christmas Market directly outside their iconic cathedral which is very popular in particular. Definitely a great spot to take some pictures.

In addition to these 4 there is also a very large Christmas Market in Dortmund NRW which hosts “the largest Christmas tree in the world” at 45 meters high, weighing 40,000 kg, and holding 50,000 light, lamps, and ornaments! In reality, it is actually 1,700 individual Christmas trees constructed together to make this “Christmas tree”. It is still a sight worth seeing and is also surrounded by a huge Christmas Market which includes theme rides and a huge Ferris Wheel. Definitely worth a visit if you have the chance!

StageHands At CompaMed

Recently StageHands provided crew for the CompaMed Exhibition at the Düsseldorf Messe. CompaMed is an exhibition that focuses on medical devices and innovations. From implants, to surgical instruments, to rehabilitation devices, this exhibition had a wide variety of products and information to offer.

For this event our crew mainly helped with video setup. Mounts needed to be positioned and secured to over a dozen stands through-out the exhibition hall. We also drilled the necessary holes and placed the wiring for each of these setups. After each screen was mounted our crew helped set them up and made sure each client could get their programs running. This was one of the most important aspect of the job; not just setting the equipment up but also making sure each client has an easy time using the equipment.

If you are planning an upcoming event StageHands.net is here to help. From small booths to large conferences and concerts our crews have the knowledge and skills to make set-up and tear-down a breeze. E-Werk And StageHands

Berlin Historic Sites

Recently StageHands helped with set up for a project at one of E-Werk’s historic sites in Berlin. With its first power station being built in 1885 there is a long history to these sites. From power generation, to years as an iconic music venue, to modern renovations into office and event spaces, E-Werk has seen many changes through the years. Despite all the change though it has kept its industrial look and architecture.

First Power Stations

In the 1880s Emil Rathenau began plans to build power stations throughout Berlin with the goal of pushing Germany’s industrial development throughout the coming decades. The first of these stations were built in the mid to late 1880s and made things like the electrified S-Bahn possible among many other technologies. This continued until the 1920s when new technologies allowed for high voltage current to be transported longer distances. Meaning that power stations could be moved to the outskirts of cities. This meant transformer facilities had to be built in the cities instead. This continued to be the purpose of these sites up until 1973 when most of the sites were shut down.

A Berlin Music Icon

After these sites were no longer being used for industrial purposes they caught the attention of some prominent figures in the Berlin music scene. It became particularly famous within the techno scene. Between 1992 and 1997 famous DJs from around the world played at several E-Werk sites, including the famous “Love Parade”. The final party was a 3-day event with over 4,000 people in attendance.

Renovation and Modern Use

Once this chapter of E-Werk’s history was done several renovation projects were started between 2000 and 2005. This was done in order to transform the sites into spaces for office and event use. Today several of the sites are renovated apartment buildings, office spaces, and large halls. Despite the renovations though these sites have still held onto their industrial design and stand out as unique and interesting, yet useful event spaces in Berlin.

Grand Hall Zollverein

Last week StageHands.net had to pleasure of working at a UNESCO World Heritage site; The Grand Hall Zollverein. The Zollverein is an industrial coal mining complex opened in 1847. The site was in operation until 1986, when it was closed down and then immediately bought by the State. Because of this immediate take-over there was minimal decay of the site and much of it was preserved. This is one of the reasons it later became a World Heritage Site. In addition to this, it is also the site of the Ruhr Museum. A museum with over 6,000 exhibits from all across the “Ruhr” area.

For this particular event we helped set up for a conference and banquet. Some tasks we were involved with included setting up lights, LED displays, sound equipment, displays, and unloading/loading materials. Below are some pictures from our work there, If you are interested in finding out more about the Grand Hall Zollverein feel to visit their website at www.grand-hall.de. And for more information about StagehHands.net and the services we provide visit our website at stagehands.net or email us at mail@stagehands.net.
